Everything Under the Stars 15Chapter 15: Tension

Heather wrapped a towel around herself before she pressed a button to shut off an opaque force field; it hummed softly as it dispersed and she stepped carefully out of Neelix's shower.
As she began to dry herself off, she noticed her reflection in a large mirror that was placed on the wall. She stared at herself for awhile in thought... and let out a deep sigh...
There was so much on her mind that left her feeling pressured and confused as to what to do. She missed home. Things use to be so simple... Now everything was a confused mess of emotions. She wondered what her parents were doing... what they thought. If they had been able to move on... That thought hurt. She didn't want to feel as though she had been forgotten.. but she knew her family loved her so she felt that she had no reason to think such things, but she also didn't want to think of how much pain they were in, either. Not knowing what had happened to their daughter...

Later that evening, Neelix and Heather had finally settled down for the night.
Several minutes of silence had passed as Heather stared across at Neelix as they both laid together in bed. The way Heather was staring at him reminded Neelix of that moment when she had explored his face, touching him... examining him. It was like her eyes were studying his features, taking in his appearance.
He caught himself doing the same. It was hard not to when someone was gazing at you for so long without a word...
He noticed movement out of the corner of his eye as she slowly extending her arm out. He moved only his eyes down to watch as she brought her hand over to his. He didn't move; curious to see what she was doing

She could hear his soft voice in her dreams...
And it slowly pulled her from them...
Heather roused and opened her eyes to a blurred silhouette above her.. Until her eyes adjusted and his face slowly came into focus.
"Neelix...?" She said his name curiously as she stretched out her arms lazily and yawned deeply. He smiled at her and leaned in to gently kiss her forehead. He lowered his head down and nuzzled along the side of her face before he pulled up, away from her. "Heather..." He whispered to her again, "I have a surprise for you today."
She cocked her head slightly in response, still groggy from just waking... but she was curious for him to tell her.
"What is it...?" She asked but he just smiled down at her. "It wouldn't be much of a surprise if I told you now.." He replied and she squinted her eyes and smile

The following morning, Neelix wasted no time getting back to the workshop.
His haste helped him to keep his mind off of what had happened the night before.. which only brought up more questions than answers. Unsettling feelings that left him feeling confused. After what had happened, he assumed he was not alone in his feelings anymore, and had a strong intuition that something, anything, was there inside Heather, as well. A tiny spark of hope. The thought warmed him inside...
But, like Heather, he needed to be sure... which, unfortunately, only time would allow. When Heather was ready.. if she really was feeling something for him, she needed time to slowly open up to him. At least, he hoped...
As Neelix and Heather entered the workshop, they were both startled by a loud commotion. They turned their attention in the direction of the chaos and Heather was both stunned and intrigued by what she saw: All the

Heather lay awake beside Neelix, staring up at the cracks along the ceiling of his quarters. She had been awake for the past hour while he slept beside her, unable to fall back asleep. She was still hungry but at least it wasn't so bad that she felt like her own stomach was eating itself.
She kept wondering why she wouldn't wake up. Why this dream wouldn't end. It was all too strange to be real so it had to be fake, right?
She turned her head to look at the strange creature called Neelix, watching his body moving up and down slowly with each breath. Even though she was afraid, he had been her only ray of hope through all of this and he was trying... even when she was frightened or a pain in the ass, he didn't give up on her. She tried to smile a little to herself as she watched him sleep but her smile faded as she wondered where exactly he came from or, really, where she had ended up. She hadn't seen any other human

Heather sat quietly on Neelix's bed as another random object went zipping across the room. She sighed out her nose as she made a face.
"I can't believe what I've gotten myself into... this is insane! He's going to ask me to do something crazy.. I just know it! What else could possibly be worth it to him if it wasn't something insane, huh?! What was I thinking to take your advice!"
Veeno didn't answer. He was leaning against the door frame of the main entrance to Neelix's quarters with his arms crossed. He continued to watch as Neelix tore apart his quarters in frustration and looked over at Heather. They both shrugged at one another as they turned their attention back to yet another item being tossed across the room.
"It's not all that bad..." Veeno finally said, "I mean, you are getting his protection after all."
"Yeah and at what price, huh?! Not all that bad..." Neelix repeated Veeno's sentence, mocking him

Neelix roused to a soft repetitive beeping. It was the following day and he was happy that after Heather had rested the previous afternoon, that he was able to prepare her an evening meal which she not only enjoyed, but was able to keep down.
It wasn't that Heather wasn't able to consume any alien foods, she already had, so this was obviously not the case. It's just that some of them are a risk to anyone if that individual hadn't built up an immunity to the alien bacteria that can sometimes still be present in certain foods.
Neelix sat up, seeing Heather beside him. She rolled from her side to her stomach, seemingly annoyed, and shoved her face against the pillow. It was obvious she was still tired and didn't appreciate the annoying sound. He smiled and stood, moving to the back of his quarters towards his console. He knew exactly what the sound represented; a message. He pressed a button to play it, expecting it to be Ve

As Neelix slowly woke and parted his eyes, a wave of panic shot through him as the bed beside him was empty. He sat up quickly, eyes darting across the room, but she was no where in sight.
"Heather...?" He called out to her as he stood and rounded the wall to look in the back of his quarters... and breathed deep with relief. Heather looked at him with dismal eyes before turning her head back to continue staring out into space...
Neelix lowered his head, hesitant to approach her but at the same time, a strong urge forced him forward. He slowly walked to her and gently slipped his arms around her from behind, hugging her softly, but she didn't even acknowledge him or stir at his touch. He felt broken from her.. and it hurt. He had tried so hard to preserve their fragile bond... only to have it all come crashing down once the truth came out? He didn't even really know what was hurting her more: Never being able to go home, or being

Neelix turned on the lights as he entered his quarters. As usual, the place was a mess. Thick wires were sprawled about along with crates and tools. It was obvious he was a mechanic.. and a bachelor. Both for a very long time. The girl was limp in his arms as he carried her inside, carefully moving between the crates and over the wires, to his bed.. or really, a large mattress like padding that laid on the floor in a far corner of the room. He knelt down with her beside the mattress, delicately pulling the fabric from around her body and quickly shoved it aside. He then carefully laid her down onto his bed.
She groggily opened her eyes, looking up at him. He smiled at her and ran a hand along her face, "It's ok.." he whispered, but she just weakly stared at him. He lowered his gaze down to the end of the bed and grabbed at his wrinkled and disarrayed sheets, pulling them up and over her as she continued to watch him through tired
